Significance of Dashain Festival among Nepalese
Dashain is the great festival of the Hindus. The people worship goddess Durga during this festival. It is celebrated as the sign of victory of truth and virtue against injustice and vice. The festival is celebrated for 15 days. The festival falls around September-October. This festival is known for emphasis on family gatherings, as well as on a renewal of community ties. People of all ages young to old, take this festival as good and holy day to bless and wish good to their relatives and friends.
The first day of Dashain is known as Ghatasthapana, on this day, people fill a vessel with sand and sow maize and barley seeds and is covered and worshiped for 10 days. On the seventh day, Phulpati is celebrated which is also known as ‘Saptami’. The eight day is known as Maha Aastami.. Maha Navami is the ninth day of Dashain. The tenth day is named as Vijaya Dashami which is the most important day of this festival. On the tenth day, younger ones in a family receive Tika, Jamara and blessings from elders as well as respected people. The fifteenth day of Dashain is the last day that falls on the full moon day called Kojagrata Purnima. The actual meaning of the Kojagrata is ‘who is awake’. It is the festival in which family members gather and enjoy together. They forget their worries and coddle themselves in joy. Schools, offices, organizations etc. remain closed during the time and people far away return back home for the festive celebration with their kith and kins. The markets during the Dashain are worth visiting with so much of the crowd and many offers in almost every sector. Around this time the population of Kathmandu is greatly reduced.This is the festival for all groups and classes of people. During Dashain people wear fine and clean clothes. Despite this, Dashain has a dark side too. Numerous , animals are killed mercilessly. People engage themselves in taking drinks, different beverages, gambling and so on. Some people even celebrate in an expensive way. Indeed, celebrating festivals like Dashain gives us complete joy and spreads a true message of brother hood. Kite flying village swings are the highlights of Dashain.
Some times Dashain is one of the greatest hazards for the poor ones, who cannot afford the money for the occasion. Some of them take loans from the banks and some of them take loan from friend and relatives. This will automatically makes them to carry burden due to Dashain. Whatever the case is Dashain is one of the greatest fete or occasion of Hindu all over the world. And the celebration style of Dashain in Nepal is different and extra-ordinary.The Malshree dhun is incorporated into mainstream Nepalese music as the music of Dashain. It is the tune that announces the Dashain has arrived. Last but not the least Dashain Festival is one of the most important Hindu festival which is celebrated all over Nepal delightfully. Dashain festival represent Nepal as richer in cultural diversity. Nepal is a country rich in culture and traditions.
